Apollo Soucek

Apollo Soucek was a United States Navy Naval Aviator, who became a test pilot in the 1920s. He set and held multiple flight records, most notably at the time in 1930, the world record altitude of 43,166 feet. He was flying a single engined Wright biplane. He also served as a Task Force Commander.
Soucek rose to the rank of Rear Admiral of carrier Strike Group 3 (March 1952 – February 1953), and was named as Chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics (BuAer). Upon retirement, NAAS Oceana (later to be NAS Oceana) was named Apollo Soucek Field, a name that still stands today.
