Apian

Apian (also: Apian-Bennewitz, seldom Apian von Bennewitz) is the name of a German noble family.

Members are, among others

  • Peter Apian, also Petrus Apianus or Peter Bienewitz, (1495-1552), German humanist (father of Philipp Apian)
  • Philipp Apian, also Philipp Apianus, (1531-1589), German mathematician, physician and cartographer (son of Peter Apian)
  • Paul Otto Apian-Bennewitz, founder of the Museum of Musical Instruments in Markneukirchen, Germany


Apian is also the name of a secondary school in Ingolstadt, Germany, the so-called Apian-Gymnasium, named after Peter Apian and Philipp Apian.
