From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Antrim is one of the six counties comprising Northern Ireland.
County Antrim was represented in the Northern Ireland House of Commons 1921-1973. This article deals with the Antrim County constituencies. For the County Antrim Borough constituencies in the City of Belfast, see Belfast (Northern Ireland Parliament constituencies). See also the List of Northern Ireland Parliament constituencies 1921-1973.
[edit] Boundaries
1921-1929: The part of County Antrim not included in the Belfast seats was a seven member constituency, electing MPs using the single transferable vote method of proportional representation. There was a two member UK Parliament constituency of Antrim, 1922-1950, with the same boundaries.
1929-1969: The area was divided into seven single-member divisions, electing MPs using the first past the post electoral system. From north to south the divisions were:-
- North; bordered by the sea to the north, Londonderry North to the west, Bann Side and Mid to the south and the sea to the east.
- Mid; bounded by North to the north, Bann Side to the west, Antrim and Larne to the south and the sea to the east.
- Bann Side; with North to the north, Londonderry North and Londonderry South to the west, Lough Neagh to the south, Antrim to the south east and Mid to the east.
- Larne; adjacent to Mid to the north, Antrim to the west, Carrick to the south and the sea to the east.
- Antrim; adjoining Mid to the north, Bann Side and Lough Neagh to the west, South to the south, Belfast to the south east, Carrick to the east and Larne to the north east.
- Carrick; next to Larne to the north, Antrim to the east, Belfast to the south and the sea to the east.
- South; in the southernmost part of the county with Antrim to the north, Lough Neagh to the west, Down Iveagh to the south, Down Mid to the east and Belfast to the north east.
1969-1973: Under the Electoral Law Act (Northern Ireland) 1968, the four member Queen's University of Belfast constituency was abolished in 1969. Two of its seats were re-allocated to Antrim. The new divisions of Larkfield and Newtownabbey affected the boundaries of the existing Antrim, Bann Side, Carrick and South seats.
