Antoine Tempé

Antoine Tempé is a French born photographer who has done extensive work in New York City and West Africa. He is mostly known for his studio shots of African dancers and for his portraits of African artists and intellectuals.
In his portraits, Antoine Tempé captures the soul and the personality of his models. Often described by critics as minimalistic, stylish and humorous, Tempé’s portraits are easily recognizable. With a minimal use of artifice and props, and in a carefully picked composition in front of a simple background, his subjects’ presence fills the square frame, the standard format of a Hasselblad camera.
His images, in the form of large, carefully executed, black and white photographic prints that often measure up to 4 feet in height, have been exhibited in Europe, the U.S. and Africa. His work has been prominently featured in magazines such as Photo Magazine, Le Monde 2 and Libération, among others.
