"Angry Chair" by grunge band Alice in Chains was the 4th single off their 1992 album Dirt. It is the 12th track on the album. The song was one of few songs solely written by lead singer Layne Staley for the band. It is about Staley's addiction to heroin, and his time in rehab for his addiction to heroin, which would eventually end his life on April 5, 2002. It also has a reference to the Stephen King film The Shining directed by Stanley Kubrick in the line "I'm a dull boy work all day" which is taken from one of the most famous scenes in the film in which main character Jack Torrence writes "All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy" in many different ways on his typewriter. The movie was also referenced in the echoing of "red rum" in the interlude "Iron Gland" on the Dirt album. "Angry Chair" would later be unplugged on the MTV show MTV Unplugged (although not shown in the aired performance) which was later released as an album entitled Unplugged. It was also featured on the greatest hits and their box-set Music Bank.
Jerry Cantrell on the song, from the liner notes of 1999's Music Bank box set collection: "Such a brilliant song. I'm very proud of Layne for writing it. When I've stepped up vocally in the past he's been so supportive, and here was a fine example of him stepping up with the guitar and writing a masterpiece."
