Angela (Inheritance)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Angela is a fictional character in Christopher Paolini's Inheritance trilogy. She is a witch and a friend of Eragon. She is also accompanied by a werecat named Solembum.
Angela is an herbalist by trade. A short, curly-haired woman, she makes most of her living by fortune-telling for the richer women of Teirm, and conjuring potions that she seems to imply don't really work. Some more of her hobbies include gathering mushrooms, and proving that toads do not exist. Most of the time, Angela explains, she does not use true arts to tell the fortunes of the aristocrats, but she does use magic to learn Eragon's future by using dragon knuckle bones. "They are not like crystal balls or divining cards" she tells him, "for these hold real power." The bones have runes carved into them. Rumors have spread that the dragon kunckle bones have come from Glaedr, Oromis's gold dragon who's leg was brutally cut and left with a white stump in its place. She admits that his future is hard to read, but reveals that he will have many choices before him. Only one path, however, will lead him to a peaceful ending. Solembum is her constant companion. He fights in the battle of Farthen Dûr as a shaggy-haired boy with a black dagger.
Angela later appears in Tronjheim, the headquarters of the Varden. There she seems to be one of the more powerful users of magic. She comes to Eragon's rescue during the battle under Farthen Dûr, wielding a two handed dwarf weapon; in Eldest it is revealed that she had won the weapon by "trickery" at the dwarven temple at Tarnag . She heals most of Eragon's injuries after the Battle of Farthen Dûr. She also appears in Eldest, watching over Elva, the child Eragon mistakenly cursed. She fights with the Varden in the Battle of Burning Plains, and poisons the enemy army's food and water supply. She appears fairly young but claims to be older, saying that the herbs she eats result in her younger appearance.
[edit] Portrayal in film
In the film adaptation of Eragon, Angela is played by Joss Stone in her acting debut.
[edit] Trivia
- Angela was named after and loosely based on the author's younger sister.[1]
- When Eragon and Brom first meet Angela, she is trying to prove that all toads are, in fact, frogs. She thinks that this will mean that, as toads do not exist, they cannot harm people by giving them warts or being used in evil potions. Eragon remains unconvinced.
- This is brought up again in Eldest.
