Angami Zapu Phizo

Angami Zapu Phizo was the Nagaland based Indian revolutionary, who dreamt of making a free Naga state. In his youth, he served as a volunteer in Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's Indian National Army but late grew disillusioned with the political motives of the newly independent Indian government. He was primarily responsible for making Nagas as "one people".
He is primarily regarded by Naga people as the "Father of the Nagas" and as a freedom fighter who was a "pioneer" among people of his own age.
Phizo and his colleagues declared Naga Independence day on 14th August 1947 ahead of the Indian Independence Day. Phizo selflessly dedicated for the Naga people throughout his life. During his long years of struggle, he did not take a single paisa from the people to buy even a palm-sized plot of land for himself or his family.
He worked for the Independence of the Nagas from 1946-1990. As a consequence of his strugggle, he did not see his wife for over 33 years and he died in exile without seeing her again, thereby breaking the record of Nelson Mandela and his wife Mrs. Winnie Mandela.
He died in exile in London in 1990.
