[edit] Lethargy and indifference of Telugu historians

It is sad to see that Telugu history being distorted by others who are interested to paint Telugu history as that of Tamils (E.g., Vengi) or Kannadigas (Rashtrakuta and Vijayanagar). For instance, the evidences in favour of Telugu origin of Vijayanagar Empire were downplayed and enormous material (authentic or otherwise) was included to show that Telugus had no contribution. It is common knowledge that Telugu literature had a heyday during the time of Krishnadevarayan who himself was a great Telugu poet. It was totally ignored by one Kannada parochial historian, Dinesh Kannambadi, who has been playing havoc with history and is attempting to show that South Indian history is Karnataka history.Telugu historians must wake up from slumber, take interest in Wikipedia and restore the true picture.

balls to your knoweldge.more than 60% of records, inscriptions during vijayanagar kingdom is maintaining in kannada & the rest in sanskrit, prakrit & telugu. It is also very well known fact that vijayanagr kingdom has roots in karnataka & kannadigas. Also telugu was the personal preference of Sri krishnadevaraya (who btw is tuluva kannadiga & not a telugite) & during his days telugu saw the beginning of their literature. So instead of being thankful to kannadigas u r trying putting some bullshit. You nerd tell me how many places of historical or ancient significance is in Andhra compared to tamilnadu or karnataka despite being such a big state in the south. Also Kannada inscriptions are the highest in the country than any other language & that tells the most of the story.

Sri Krishnadeva Raya, a Kannadiga, proclaimed 'Desa Bhashalandu Telugu lessa', which literally means 'Of all the Indian languages, Telugu is the Sweetest'.

Also u r not anything great compared to Karnataka & Tamilnadu in any respect. Your pathetic culture & attitude sucks. It's a fact.

Wake up Telugu Historians. Now, Andhra Satavahanas are being branded Tamils. Protect your history from being corrupted by others!!

Please note that this article is not maintained or supported by "Telugu Historians". You can always rectiy the mistakes if you know the facts (with proper citation).
Please be more specific regarding the location of factual inaccuracies. You can mark them with "[citation needed] " if you feel it needs to verified. Sumanthk 11:11, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Quality issues

The article definitely deserves it "B-class" status. It is poorly organized and the quality of English at some places is poor. Where are the Telugu scholars and PhDs? Maybe someone should ask professors from Government universities to contribute to wikipedia - they do have a lot of time on their hands. Unfortunately, I do not have enough knowledge in this area to edit what has been written. I have removed some (rather poorly written) sections which contained redundant information (on Telugu for example-there is a page for the language and related issues).

[edit] NPOV issues

This article is sickeningly biased. In the "Economy" section, it says:

"With a dynamic leadership, the state is steering the nation to new dimensions in the fields of Information Technology, Biotechnology, Pharmaceuticals, Business Management, Construction, etc., to emerge as a land of immense business opportunities."

Contrast this with the following, written in a recent Guardian article:

"During the hungry season, hundreds of thousands of people in Andhra Pradesh are now kept alive on gruel supplied by charities. Last year, hundreds of children died in an encephalitis outbreak because of the shortage of state-run hospitals. The state government's own figures suggest that 77% of the population have fallen below the poverty line. The measurement criteria are not consistent, but this appears to be a massive rise. In 1993 there was one bus a week taking migrant workers from a depot in Andhra Pradesh to Mumbai. Today there are 34. The dispossessed must reduce themselves to the transplanted coolies of Blair's new empire." [1]

I did some work on this article a while back, and I can see that all my contributions have been removed without discussion, so I'm not going to try again. Palefire 23:58, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Anon contrib

Anon 70.33.98.171 (talk contribs) added that

An important village contributing to major rice export is Gumpalagudem.

I'm not from Andhra Pradesh at all, but Google really do not show any hits at all about that. So, can anyone else, especially people from Andhra Pradesh verify this statement? Thanks. --Ragib 02:52, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

I'm not from Andhra, but being from neighbouring Tamil Nadu, I'm sure there is a vast region in Andhra under rice cultivation and no single village can be notable in that respect. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 05:06, July 22, 2005 (UTC)

Ok, Anon 70.33.98.171 (talk contribs) is adding more claims to the village, would you please provide references to support the claim? I'm hopelessly unable to find that by Googling or otherwise. Thanks. --Ragib 05:35, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

I am from Andhra Pradesh and I am a beuracrat on Telugu wiki and contributed to several district pages.I have never heard of Gumpalagudem anywhere. Must be a very remote village.
It being major rice exporter is totally unrealistic fact. Generally coastal districts of the state especially East Godavari, West Godavari and Krishna are considered to be the major contributors to Andhra's rice production. --Vyzasatya 15:04, 24 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] New Telangana secessionism

  • This need to be dealt in a seperate article. It violates NPOV (highly opinionated) and also states irrelevant material in the subheading "NTR and Heavy diversion of state reserves to Telugu Film industry". This is a controversial issue and heavily opinionated. --Vyzasatya 15:10, 24 August 2005 (UTC)
Moved this subsection and some realated material into new article Andhra Pradesh Politics. But it still has NPOV issues --Vyzasatya 15:22, 25 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Ranga Reddy

@ 131.225.82.117

sorry about rangareddi v. ranga reddy. perhaps someone should look into changing the map that says "rangareddi", just so we have consistency between the list of districts and the accompanying map. Vvuppala

[edit] Muslim invaders

"Hyderabadi cuisine, influenced by the Muslim invaders from the North West of India centuries ago,"

I think as grown men and women, we can afford to get over the fact that Muslims came to Andhra by invasion, agreed? How they got to Andhra is especially irrelevant when it comes to their cuisine.

Vvuppala 04:30, 12 October 2005 (UTC)

Agree, though sometimes I wonder if we are too much into consensus-building mode; it may probably be best to edit this page without much ado as most of the contribs (in terms of quantity, not necessarily quality) come from anon IPs who hardly look at the talk page. --Gurubrahma 06:14, 12 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Andhra name from maharashtra??

hi 210.211.136.93, wrote Andra pradesh derived its name from a maharathi dynasty 'Satavahans/Andras'.This dynasty orginated from 'Andra Maval' region of western Maharashtra.Hence they were called as 'Andras'.Subsequently Andra Pradesh got its name from this dynasty.

  • This is a unique theory never heard before about Andhra history. Would like to know more about it. Please provide references to cite the above. whose view point is this coming? obviously it is not a popular mainstream idea.
  • It is known beyond doubt that satavahanas are Andhras not Maharashtrians though they ruled considerable part of western maharashtra along with Andhra. --Vyzasatya 07:44, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
I found that Origin of Satavahanas is not clear whether they are from Andhra Pradesh or Maharashtra. Partly the above claim of Satavahanas being maharathi dynasty is not true. Rest could be true that Satavahanas are called Andhras because they ruled Andra Maval region. Anyways made changes in article to reflect a more NPOV.--Vyzasatya 08:04, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
That's probably the best route to take. I've never heard of that perspective on the derivation of Andhra before.

Vvuppala 00:35, 14 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Andhra Economy

I have restored the portion of this section that refers to recent progress in various fields, (IT, Biotech, Pharmaceuticals, etc). Each of the items currently links to general articles about the subjects. However, I think that the only way that those items should remain in the article is if there are sections talking about IT in Andhra, Biotech in Andhra, etc. Just listing technologies that exist somewhere in Andhra is of little use. Vvuppala 00:35, 14 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Andhra History

I've segmented the Andhra History section as per the convention followed in the Tamil Nadu article.

The result is several new sub-sections, all of which need attention. A state of more than 50 million people, and of unquestionable antiquity should not have so small a section about its past.

Some major parts of the state's history are articles unto themselves: the various dynasties that ruled over portions of the state, and the major cities all have their own articles. We need to integrate information about these parts of state history without rewriting the whole articles again.

Vvuppala 07:30, 19 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Time zone abbreviation

IST is the abbrevation for Irish Summer Time in Europe, which is UTC + 1 hour.

In India IST is widely used as abbreviation for Indian Standard Time, which is UTC (or GMT) + 5 1/2 hours. Probably there is no internationally accepted IST? --Gurubrahma 08:46, 30 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Important Cities

We now have a footer listing the cities of importance in Andhra, do we still need to have a separate section in the article?Vvuppala 23:20, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

No citation given for the order according to size, hence listed in alphabatical order, User:Apstate.

[edit] Dance

Why is the number of movie theaters under the section Dance? I edited it out yesterday and addedd Andhra natyam, only to find that it has been removed. Maybe a separate section of Tollywood is needed.

Hm, strange. I don't know why it was edited out. The information looks legit. I'll let Gurubrahma a chance to respond, and will revert tomorrow if it doesn't clear up. Vvuppala 11:08, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
My apologies, at first glance it wasn't clear as to what exactly was added. I've already responded on the user's talkpage, asking him to feel free to add back the information with references - also, it did not appear legit as he edited out the bit abt the movies. He shd have probly moved it to a separate sub-section. btw, "Andhra Natyam" scores only 218 hits on google and is not as famous as, say Kuchipudi (83,000 hits). Hence, I felt that mention of "Andhra Natyam" may not be encyclopedic. --Gurubrahma 13:14, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
Perhaps you typed something in wrong. I searched for Andhra Natyam, and got 12,500 hits. Apparently, Andhra Natyam is a historical dance, one that has been resurrected by dance enthusiasts after it nearly disappeared- explaining why Kuchipudi is more famous. Thus, I'm restoring the edit. Vvuppala 14:08, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
Thanks Varun, indeed I must've searched for something wrong. Actually, the search must be done for "Andhra Natyam" (that is, with quotes) and it gives 8,800 hits. Without quotes, it is 12,500 hits. Thanks again. --Gurubrahma 05:27, 6 December 2005 (UTC)
Cheers! Vvuppala 12:08, 6 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Food

I just changed the description of dosas from pancake-lik to crepe-like. A matter of thickness I suppose.

[edit] Interesting Facts section

I was wondering if it would be appropriate to add an interesting facts section to the page. For example, in Srikakulam district (primarily) there is this odd way of smoking cigars with the lit end inside one's mouth (referred to as adda-poka). I am sure there are many more such interesting things/facts about Andhra Pradesh.

Yeah sure, you can add a trivia section, as long as it conforms to WP:V. btw, I'd believe that the cigar is more of a beedi and the proper english name would be cheroot - also, AFIK, it is smoked in that way in large parts of AP by the working class women, though it has reduced in the last 10-15 years. Please sign your posts with ~~~~. Thanks, --Gurubrahma 06:33, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Maps

Hi! Have updated + added maps of AP (More available at commons:Category:Andhra Pradesh district maps). Could not find a section to add the map showing all the rail links in the state though. Comments/suggestions welcome. Cheers! --ΜιĿːtalk 13:00, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] revert multiple edits by 131.225.82.45 - Factual inaccuracies & POV

I have reverted these edits because of several factual distortions. Neelam Sanjiva Reddy was the first chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, not Bezwada Gopal Reddy. Bezwada was the second chief minister of Andhra (that is, the state without Telangana), after Tanguturi Prakasam. Indira Gandhi contested from Medak in 1980, not 1982; no record to show that NTR supported her. Chandrababu Naidu joined TDP only after it came to power. Also, the edits had a lot of POV and a bit of personal attacks. Hence, I have reverted the same. --Gurubrahma 05:04, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wow Telugu

I have seen that a lot of edits are being made adding Wowtelugu.com to the lead section. This should be avoided as the correct place for such links is the "External links" section. I have added the link there. If someone feels that the link should be there in the lead, please discuss here before adding. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 07:50, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

It was link spam. They keep adding it. I had removed them plenty of times before. If you notice it, please remove (per WP:NOT). - Ganeshk (talk) 08:02, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
There is clear policy that WP is not the place for advertising. These links can be removed per WP:NOT. If this keeps happening, the users can/will be blocked. - Ganeshk (talk) 08:21, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

(The text below is transcripted from User:Ganeshk's talk page for centralized discussion)

i added wowtelugu.com and fullastrology.com bcz they are providing interest information including telugu cinema gossipos by wowtelugu.com and cultural based information which is most important for telugu people throughout world. Even the state Govt of Andhra Pradesh starts its day on ugadi with panchangam. similarly most of the information in the www.fullastrology.com is free of cost and useful to the people of world in general and telugu people of andhra pradesh in particular. the predictions given by sri nookala suryanarayana about hard ware importance in andhra pradesh and in India came true in last year telugu panchangam and it is proudly placed in the talk of today of the thatstelugu.com , a popular telugu portal. hence it is justified the link , i need ur feedback in the matter with regards v pavan kumar MS—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 202.65.150.198 (talkcontribs).

Hello V Pavan Kumar. We understand that you added these links in the article in good faith. However, we feel that these links shouldn't find a place here. The reason being that Wikipedia is an Encyclopedia and not a gossip magazine. For details, see WP:NOT to know what Wikipedia is not. Hence, as a policy, we discourage links to commercial websites unless the website is directly relevant to the topic being discussed and will help the encyclopedia reader in understanding the topic better and in reliable manner. The trouble with commercial websites is often with respect to reliability and self-promotion. Note that the issue whether they provide interesting information is also your point of view. The govt. of Andhra Pradesh starts its day on ugadi with panchangam, so this specific information can be added (in not more than a single sentence) in the govt. of Andhra Pradesh's article while discussing it under religious influence on govt's functioning. But however, this does not mean that we add links to all sites that provide panchangam. If the site in question is THE ONLY SITE to provide panchangam, then its notable; else its not and should not be mentioned. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 11:21, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] YSR

Added YSR's middle name. Since the chief minister is commonly known as "YSR" added what the S stood for (Sandinti) for those unfamiliar with Andhra Pradesh and its politics. -- Brown cp 23:09, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] "Andhra" versus "Andhra Pradesh"

There are several instances where the state is referred to simply as “Andhra”. Since the term “Andhra” is sometimes also used in reference to the coastal region. I think it would be best to use the term “Andhra Pradesh” when the referring to the state. -- Brown cp 23:09, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Between 1953 and 1956 there used to be a state called "Andhra State" which was merged with Telangana(Telugu speaking districts of Hyderabad state) in 1956 to become "Andhra Pradesh" state. So Tanguturi Prakasham Pantulu is first Chief Minister of Andhra State and Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy is first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh State.

[edit] Synonyms

Andhra and Telangana are synonyms. Andhra is Sanskrit word and Telangana is Telugu word for Telugu country. Even the coastal region is part of Telangana although popular usage does not confirm to this fact. E.g., 1. Andhra Satavahanas who ruled the major part of Souhth India for 500 years covered the whole of present day Telugu speaking region. 2. When Musunuri Prolaneedu recaptured Warangal from Delhi sultanate and united the whole Telugu country he proclaimed himself "Andhradesaadheeswara" and "Andhrasuratraana". It is unfortunate that Telugu people got mentally alienated from each other by various historical and economic reasons.

[edit] Ordering of Culture sections

Currently the section “State Symbols” (state tree, state sport) precedes sections on Literature, Music, Dance and Movies. Are “State Symbols” really that important? Can they be relegated to the bottom of the list? Or perhaps be included in a trivia section?

Also the Movies section precedes Literature, Music and Dance. We know telugu people love their movies but shouldn’t Literature and Music precede Movies? -- Brown cp 23:09, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ordering of Regions, Cities & Districts

Currently the order is regions, cities and then districts. The order has been changed to Regions, districts to cities.

The description of the regions did not correspond to the order of the descriptions. The regions were listed in the following order Coastal Andhra, Telangana and then Rayalaseema. But the descriptions were in the following order Telangana, Coastal Andhra and then Rayalseema. This has been fixed the order of listing (according to population size) now corresponds to the order of the description.

The order of the cities needs to be cleaned up. The cities are not ordered according to size. Does anyone know of a source that shows the relative size of Andhra Pradesh cities? -- Brown cp 00:43, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

You can find a list here [2].This source is used in many wikipedia articles. Please rearrange the cities based on this source. Sumanthk 06:31, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the source. Instead of including all cities, I think it would be reasonable to cut of the list at six. -- Brown cp 21:18, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Telugu Language

As pointed out by a poster above there is far too detailed a description of the Telugu language. The place best suited for this information is the Telugu Language article. Incidentally there is far too much padding in this article. -- Brown cp 00:52, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Number of languages listed in the languages section

It would be best to not include the languages spoken by less than 2% of the people, because it statistically insignificant, at least not in a article that deals with AP as a whole. -- Brown cp 21:42, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Description of Hyderabad & Visakhapatanam

I have taken the description of these two cities that currently exists in the "Urban Centers of Economic Importance and incorporated them with city descriptions. It seems redundant to describe the cities twice. -- Brown cp 22:17, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Deleted Revenues Of AP Govt

The revenue stats listed are irrelevant. And they only list stats for 2000 and 2005. And they serve no useful purpose for readers who want an overview of AP.

[edit] Does anyone know the enrollment numbers for the universities in AP

Currently there are 23 universities listed. This listing merely consisting of the names of the universities is not really informative to a reader looking for an overview of AP. The list has to be pruned, based on size, history, repuation and etc. Until then I have deleted the listing all together. It would be better to include information on Eductation in general in AP as opposed to merely listing the universities.

[edit] Need Information

While article in Marathi language mr:गोदावरी नदी about en:Godavari River is developing we seek co-operation for more information related to

  • Tributories coming from Karnatak,andhra,orisa,
  • Erigation Projects on Godavari and Tributories
  • Urban Settelements/Cities located on bank of Godavari
  • Flood controll lines on Godavari for various cities
  • Industries and industrial pollution on Godavari
  • Translation from Marathi to English article also is welcome

[edit] Recent additions on contemporary politics

I think this needs to be cleaned up. There appear to be many wobbly statements here. Add to that there is some vandalism around the place. Blnguyen | BLabberiNg 01:59, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ridiculous

Description about a village Kancherla Palem is utterly ridiculous. Delete this.

[edit] Madras and Andhra

I believe that the current form is a POV, when it concerns Madras. The article says that historically and culturally Madras always belonged to Andhra Pradesh. However, the famous historical symbols like Parthasarathy Temple and Kapaleeswarar Temple along with many other temples are all Tamil. Throughout ancient history the Madras region was in Tamil provinces of Pallava rule, and the greatest Tamil poet, Thiruvalluvar hailed from this place. So, kindly modify the paragraph concerning Madras in the Creation of Andra Pradesh. Balajiviswanathan 00:23, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
