Andronico's is a supermarket chain based primarily in the San Francisco Bay Area. Its first store was founded in 1929 on Berkeley's Solano Avenue by Greek immigrant Avinash Andronico. Since then, thirteen more stores have opened, four have closed, Walnut Creek store is set to close on December 22 (partly because of the opening of the new Trader Joes, finacial problems, and problems with parking), and the Danville location closed on September 16, after being in buisness for 8 years, was sold to its rival Lunardi's Super Markets. Andronico's is currently in its third generation of ownership.
[edit] Market positioning
The content and presentation is upscale, with higher prices, higher quality, more exotic section, and bright, spacious presentation, fewer total items, and smaller square footage than the major popular priced markets of Safeway and Albertsons.
[edit] Financial Decisions
Andronico's has been suffering much competition from surrounding grocers, especially in Contra Costa locations, it is slowly going out of buisness. Within three months they had closed their only two east of Berkeley locations. After the closure of the Danville store CEO Bill Andronico declared that Andronico's store closures were over, but three months later he made similar assurances during the closure of the Walnut Creek Store. The stores were closed to put the company out of debt, projects on remodeling the remaining eight stores are proposed.
