Andrew Elliot

Andrew Elliot (1728 Edinburgh, Scotland-1797 at Mount Teviot, Jedburgh) took over from James Robertson (loyalist) as defacto and acting colonial governor of New York in 1783.
He arrived in America as an apprentice and later became a merchant. Elliot never really lead an administration in either role as Britain had already lost America. He later became Receiver General in 1784. Elliot was taking orders from the Commander-in-Chief of British Forces during the American Revolutionary War (Sir William Howe and his successors to 1783) and offerred many empty titles in 1782:
- head of the customs
- lieutenant governor
- receiver general of quitrents
- superintendent general of police
- chief of the superintendent department
- Commissioners for Restoring Peace to the Colonies
While Robertson persisted for a short while, Elliot fled back to England on 'Nonesuch' in 1783.
