From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
André Courrèges (born 1923) is a French fashion designer, known for his ultra-modern designs. Born in Pau in 1923, Courrèges qualified as a civil engineer before joining Balenciaga in the mid-1940s and later setting up on his own in 1961. Courrèges fused the precise technical skills he had learnt at Balenciaga with the functionalism of his training as an engineer to produce some of the most daring, visionary and avant-garde fashion designs of the 1960s. His early collections included trouser suits in white and silver, futuristic accessories such as goggles, and his famous white mid-calf boots. Courrèges later helped popularize the mini-skirt and go-go boots in France, as well as setting a trend for stark minimalist lines and co-ordinated outfits in clinging knits.
Today, Courrèges holds an almost mythical status in fashion, especially in France, as well as being remember as a truly great designer.
