And All That Could Have Been (also known as Halo 17) is a live album set and double DVD released by Nine Inch Nails in 2002. And All That Could Have Been is the seventeenth official Nine Inch Nails release. The live album contains music recorded during the Fragility 2.0 US tour in 2000; a limited edition set added a second disc titled Still containing "deconstructed" versions of previous NIN songs and some new material. The double DVD set, sold separately, also documented the Fragility 2.0 tour.

[edit] CD Version
There are two retail versions of the CD set: a 'deluxe' limited edition, packaged in a gray cloth case that contains both the Live and Still CDs together in a fold-out digipak, and the standard edition that contains only the Live disc in a single digipak. However, the Still disc is also available separately, originally via mail order from the official nin.com website.
Live contains performances from the Fragility 2.0 tour. Some of the lyrics in the songs featured on the album are different from the studio releases as Trent is notorious for changing lyrics during live shows.
Still contains somber renditions of older songs and fresh material including a title track, "And All That Could Have Been", the debut of Reznor's lyrics after the single "Deep". All of the songs on Still were performed on piano, acoustic guitar, electric piano, or other 'real' instruments backed by computer-generated synth textures. Of note is the title "Leaving Hope", which is also the publisher name under which Reznor has copyrighted music since the beginning of his songwriting career. Reznor stated in 2005 on the official nin.com website that he was very depressed during the recording of the album, as was suspected by fans for years. "Gone, Still" and "The Persistence of Loss" were originally composed for the movie One Hour Photo, but rejected by director Mark Romanek (who notably directed videos for Closer and The Perfect Drug for the band). The latter track is almost unique in the Nine Inch Nails catalogue ("Pilgrimage" aside), as it features a live horn section.
(Reznor also performed an intimate acoustic set at the Chicago Recording Company during the Fragility 2.0 tour, which is available online and in bootleg CDs such as The CRC Sessions; it includes arrangements of "Something I Can Never Have" and "The Day the World Went Away" that prefigure their Still recordings, as well as two versions of "Hurt" and full band performances of "The Fragile", "Even Deeper", and "The Big Come Down".)
[edit] DVD Version
There are also two different versions of the DVD set: one with a 5.1 Dolby Digital surround soundtrack and the other with a 5.1 DTS surround soundtrack. Other than this, both sets are identical. The DVD set is comprised of video footage from the 2000 Fragility 2.0 Tour. The band filmed the tour themselves using digital cameras and created the DVD themselves, editing it on a Mac using Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro. This video was also released on one VHS tape.
The DVD version has several easter eggs. Hidden on disc 2 are three music videos and three Fragile-era commercials.
[edit] Message
The DVD edition includes a clear, plastic slip with a message from Trent Reznor written on it. It reads:
- just a glimpse
- just a little reminder
- of a time and place we
- used to live in
- this dvd attempts to
- document the
- experience of
- nine inch nails live,
- as we were in the
- summer of 2000
- we filmed and recorded
- most of the dates of
- the north american
- fragility 2.0 tour
- with home video cameras
- then assembled
- mixed and edited this
- ourselves with our
- home computers
- in my eyes
- fragility 2.0
- was a summation of
- what we had
- accomplished up to
- that time so this dvd
- serves as a reminder
- of achievement
- as well as
- a departure point
- this is almost what
- it felt like being there
