From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ancistrodon is a (scientific) generic name that was used previously to refer to a larger group of New and Old World moccasins -- venomous pit vipers with large plates (scales) that cover the top of their heads. This group was later split up into a number of different genera:
- Agkistrodon - Moccasins and copperheads found Northern and Central America.
- Calloselasma - The Malayan pit viper found in Southeast Asia.
- Deinagkistrodon - The Hundred-pace viper found mostly in southern China.
- Gloydius - Moccasins found in Asia.
- Hypnale - Hump-nosed vipers found in India and Sri Lanka.
