Before her time on the island, Ana Lucia was an officer with the Los Angeles Police Department. She has conflicts with her captain, who is also her mother, but doesn’t ask for special treatment and gets along with her fellow officers. She has a boyfriend, Danny, and becomes pregnant, but loses the baby after being shot by a suspect at a burglary scene. She spends the next several months in physical and psychological therapy, during which time Danny leaves her. Ana Lucia returns to the force but exhibits unstable behavior on duty. When the man who shot her at the burglary scene is arrested and makes a confession she refuses to identify him in the line-up, then kills him outside a bar after his release ("Collision").

Ana Lucia leaves the force and eventually finds work as an airport security guard. She meets Christian Shephard (Jack's father) at the airport bar, who asks her to accompany him to Sydney as a "bodyguard." They purposefully create fake names for each other – "Tom" and "Sarah." In Sydney, Ana Lucia breaks up an argument when Christian visits a woman and demands to see his daughter. She later tries to convince Christian to return to the States, but he refuses and the two part ways ("Two for the Road").

Ana Lucia buys a ticket on Oceanic Flight 815 to return to Los Angeles. Prior to boarding, she calls her mother and apologizes to her, and asks to come home. She then meets and flirts with Jack Shephard at a bar at the airport. The pair arrange to get together during the flight, with Ana Lucia revealing that she has been assigned to seat 42F at the rear of the plane ("Exodus: Part 1").

After the crash

Ana Lucia crashes on the island in the tail section of Flight 815. In "The Other 48 Days" she takes strong initiative in rescuing and ensuring the well being of the other tail-section survivors, in particular two children separated from their parents. The Others begin attacking the survivors’ beach camp and abducting members of the group. During an attack in which the Others successfully abduct the children, Ana Lucia kills one of the attackers and recovers from the body a piece of paper with the names and descriptions of the abductees.

The group moves inland, with Ana Lucia assuming a leadership role and maintaining a tough persona. She suspects a traitor in the group and turns her suspicions to Nathan whom she does not remember seeing on the plane. At the new camp she digs a pit and imprisons Nathan in it, accusing him of being in league with those who abducted the other survivors. After Nathan’s apparent escape, Ana-Lucia realizes that Goodwin is the real traitor and gets him to admit aiding the abductors and killing Nathan. The two struggle and Ana Lucia manages to impale Goodwin through the chest with a wooden spear.

When Sawyer, Michael, and Jin are captured by the tail-section survivors and placed in the pit, Ana Lucia poses as another captive and is lowered into the pit to evaluate the prisoners. She takes Sawyer's gun and leaves the pit. Eventually, the three captives gain the trust of the tail-section survivors and are asked to lead the group back to their camp on the other side of the island ("...And Found"). While approaching the camp, Ana Lucia sees Shannon emerge from the jungle, mistakes her for an Other, and shoots her in the abdomen, killing her ("Abandoned").

Sayid arrives and Ana Lucia has him tied to a tree, fearing his revenge for Shannon's death. Ana-Lucia attempts to negotiate safe passage into the jungle, but her companions lose faith in her leadership and eventually head for the camp leaving Ana Lucia and Sayid alone. The two bare their souls and Ana-Lucia unties Sayid, ready to accept the consequences. Sayid spares her, commenting that they are “both already dead,” and leaves. Jack arrives moments later and he and Ana Lucia are reunited for the first time after the crash ("Collision"). At the new camp, Eko explains to Ana Lucia that the survivors see Shannon’s death as an accident, but Ana Lucia chooses to distance herself from the other survivors, feeling very guilty. Jack recognizes her law-enforcement skills.

Locke tells her about the captive Henry Gale and asks her to determine if Henry is an Other through interrogation. Ana Lucia asks Henry to draw her a map to the site of his balloon, which she finds with the help of Sayid and Charlie. After returning to the hatch with the proof that Henry was lying, Ana Lucia deflects Sayid’s arm while Sayid attempts to shoot Henry (“Dave”). She gives Jack her gun to take on his attempt to arrange a prisoner exchange with the Others (“S.O.S.”).

In "Two for the Road," Henry attacks Ana Lucia and nearly throttles her before Locke intervenes. Ana Lucia asks Sawyer for a gun but he refuses. She tries following him to his secret cache, overpowering him, and finally seducing him. The last of these tactics is successful and she manages to steal Sawyer’s gun after their romantic encounter. Ana Lucia returns to the hatch intending to kill Henry. At gunpoint, Henry tells Ana Lucia that Goodwin did not believe she was a bad person; just misunderstood. Ana Lucia is unable to kill Henry, and confesses this to Michael. Michael offers to kill Henry for her and Ana Lucia gives him the gun. Michael tells Ana Lucia that he is sorry and then shoots her in the heart, killing her.

At the moment of her death, she appears to Eko in a dream, where she is bleeding from her mouth and stomach, telling him that "You need to help John." ("?")

In "Three Minutes," a funeral takes place at the beach and she is buried next to Libby.

Trivia

  • Ana Lucia was the first second season castmember that was hired, and she made a cameo in a flashback of Jack Shephard in the season one finale.
  • Since her first name is listed on the Official ABC Lost website as "Ana Lucia," and twice as "Ana-Lucia"[1][2], it could be spelled either way; neither has been confirmed, as her name has not yet been shown on-screen.
  • Contrary to popular belief, Ana-Lucia and Libby were not killed off due to Michelle Rodriguez and Cynthia Watros' DUI arrests. Rodriguez was scheduled to appear for only one season in February of 2005, with the intention of being killed off. They found her character would not generate enough sympathy so they added Libby to it. It was only coincidence that both were arrested.[citation needed]
