Amy Gutmann (1949 - ), Ph.D., is a political theorist who taught at Princeton University from 1976 to 2004 and served as its Provost. In 2004 she became the 8th president of the University of Pennsylvania. She is currently being considered as a candidate to replace former Harvard University President Lawrence Summers by the University's governing board, however, she has stated she herself is not considering the role [1].

Upon succeeding former University of Pennsylvania president Judith Rodin, Gutmann became the first female president to succeed a female president of an Ivy League university.

One controversy that has marred her tenure was when she was photographed at a Halloween party in 2006 posing with a student dressed as a suicide bomber.

Gutmann's father fled Nazi Germany with his family in 1934. She is married to Michael Doyle, a Professor of Law and International Affairs at Columbia University. They have one daughter, Abigail.
