[edit] Fair use for Amtrak

It's a map of the system. It should be OK for fair use. It adds significantly to the article, and its inclusion shouldn't hurt Amtrak in any way. Eventually I hope to make a public domain map of Amtrak (and other railroads in the US) but for now this will do.

I don't think it matters. Amtrak is owned by the government, and certainly isn't in the intellectual property business. Fairly safe bet that it's public domain. --Alexwcovington (talk) 16:05, 27 Feb 2005 (UTC)
They're a government agency; I'm not sure of the details. On one hand, [1] says that things "are Copyright © 2004 by the National Railroad Passenger Corporation and/or its suppliers." They even get into bullshit about how they can prevent you from linking to their site. On the other hand, they are apparently subject to the Freedom of Information Act. They may be a private company that's government-funded, and the FOIA may cover those cases. --SPUI (talk) 16:24, 27 Feb 2005 (UTC)
A bit more: [2] - "By statute, Amtrak is not a government agency or establishment. It is a private corporation operated for profit. It is, however, subject to provisions of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)."
[3] - "Amtrak is not a Government agency: it is a private company (National Railroad Passenger Corporation) whose stock is entirely owned by the Federal government, and in most respects it acts like a private company. However, it is dependent on Federal funding to balance its books, because it has to compete against automobiles and airplanes which are also subsidized Federal, state, and local governments." --SPUI (talk) 16:38, 27 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Free alternative

I believe it would not be too difficult (though time consuming) to create a free alternative of this map. I also believe there is a tag for this that can be added to the main image page, but I cannot recall what it is. --tomf688 (talk - email) 02:27, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
