Ampol, the Australian Motorists Petrol Company, was incorporated in 1936 and the name was changed to Ampol Petroleum Ltd in 1949.

After a takeover by Pioneer International Ltd in 1989, Ampol was delisted.

In 1995, Caltex and Ampol merged petroleum refining and marketing assets to form Australian Petroleum Pty Ltd.
