Amp'd Mobile is a mobile phone service launched in the United States in late 2005. The company is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator and operates on the Verizon Wireless CDMA EV-DO network.

Because the Amp'd Live service works on Verizon Wireless's EV-DO network, the content is not available on the more wide-spread 1x parts of the national network. This was not mentioned by Amp'd initially. But after some complaints a disclaimer was added to their home page. This EV-DO limitation is one put into effect by Verizon for their VCast service. Sprint Nextel does not have this same kind of limitation for their own 3G MVNO's Mobile ESPN and Helio.

But actually, Amp'd Live still works even in 1x mode (e.g., where there is no EV-DO coverage).[citation needed]

Amp'd Live is similar in principal to VCast. Songs on Amp'd Live are usually $0.99, compared to $1.99 on VCast.

Its primary non-Venture Capital investors are MTV Networks and Universal Music Group. The service is targeted at 18-35 year olds.

[edit] Amp'd Live

Amp'd mobile's service is built around Amp'd Live, a permanently installed BREW application on all Amp'd Mobile phones, which features downloadable and streaming video on-demand clips, live events such as Super Cross, streaming phonecast radio stations, downloadable content such as games, ringtones, and songs. They are currently the only carrier licensed to show clips from the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Amp'd Live TV channels include Comedy Central Mobile, MTV Mobile, Spike TV, Oxygen Mobile, MTVU, VH1, Fox News, Fox Sports, Playboy Mobile, Discovery Mobile, History Channel, A&E, Biography Channel, Style, Break TV, E!, and WE Mobile.

In 2006, Amp'd Mobile announced the creation of Amp'd Mobile Canada, which will be an MVNO/partnership with TELUS launching in early 2007. In this partnership, Amp'd will take care of marketing and content, while Telus will handle the billing, the customer care, and the retail aspects of the venture. Amp'd has subsequently announced that the handset selection will be different than that available in the US, and that it will include a PDA. [1]
