[edit] Can't Get Vandal Proof to Work

When I open up Vandal Proof, all I get is a message that says Retrieving User List, please wait, but nothing else happens, is this a bug? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. --Katieh5584 10:37, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

I have discovered that the problems are being caused by Norton Internet Security 2005, has anyone else had similar problems. Its driving me crazy!! --Katieh5584 20:52, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

I have Norton Internet Security 2005, and I had no problems. You could try disabling the firewall part while you are connecting, or creating a rule for it. It should have, however, done so automatically. Ale_Jrbtalk 07:08, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
I have tried creating a rule for VP, but it still won't work and I don't like turning off the firewall.--Katieh5584 18:34, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
Are you sure there is no other firewall software that could be blocking it? You could also try re-installing Norton. This would have the effect of cleaning out the rules list, so it would ask for confirmation for everything again and you could make sure that you set it to allow, just in case it is hiding under a different name. Ale_Jrbtalk 14:32, 9 September 2006 (UTC)
No, I have only got the one firewall and I have just tried re-installing Norton, but it makes no difference!--Katieh5584 19:11, 9 September 2006 (UTC)
Does it work if you disable the firewall though? Have you tried? Ale_Jrbtalk 20:27, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

Yes it does work, but it wouldn't be a good idea to be connected to the internet without a firewall turned on!--Katieh5584 20:37, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Change of username

I've changed my username from Fracture98 to SineWave. Could I get you to update the userlist to match, please and thanks? Oh, and perhaps do me a favor and delete this comment once you're done so there's less of an obvious trail. I'll know you've changed it when I see my new ID in the approved user list. sinewaveTalk   22:53, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] arrr tis not work

I get a script error on line 525 when I log in -- "Object not found" (or maybe it's "Object expected"). url == http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:AmiDaniel/Welcome_to_VandalProof&oldid=77781094 In addition I can't get it to do anything except import the list of admins. Whenever I go on any page while using VP, there is a "script error" message continuously popping up. I tried what it said in the FAQ, but that didn't work. Any help? --TheGreatLlama (speak to the Llama!) 00:16, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] CrossOver Linux

Hey, just a quick tip, (this might not be the right section): Vandalproof runs flawlessly on CrossOver Linux, except with one speedy deletion bug I've found. CrossOver is currently available for free download, and the beta lasts for 60 days. All you need to do is install the Internet Explorer 6.0 and the OLE Component packages, and you're up and running! Shadow1 (talk) 23:44, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

It also works with CrossOver for Mac (Intel only). Well..sorta. It doesn't load the login page thingy and doesn't get any recent changes. Meh. --M1ss1ontomars2k4 (T | C | @) 01:00, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Crashes

I can't get VandalProof to work properly at all. When I open the program, all I can see is "$$LOGONMESSAGE$$", then it freezes, and I have to kill the process. What can I do to get it to work right? I'm using v1.2.2, and I've tried to fix it by clearing my monobook.js. -- Selmo (talk) 00:32, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] User list retrieval: snails pace

Hey, does anyone have a problem with retrieving a user list? mine sometimes will either

  1. Not retrieve it at all, or
  2. Take 50 million years to do it. To be realistic, 1-2 minutes.

It's very frustrating, because you can sometimes see obvious vanadalism, and not be able to click any of the rollback buttons because they only become available when the list is retrieved. --Reaper X 19:20, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Loading of page

Hi - I don't know if this issue has been raised earlier, but I have the problem that the rollback tools don't load until all the images are displayed. This creates a real delay even though I have DSL connection. (1) Is there a way to get round this ? (2) How good is the idea that you enable rollback just when the diffs are available, instead of waiting to loading the whole page. Rama's arrow 23:04, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

You can disable image loading by disabling 'picture loading' in IE prefs, the far right tab called 'advanced' i think. really helps load time. JoeSmack Talk(p-review!) 05:28, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Not being recognized

The program keeps telling me that my log-in request failed when I go to the start page; however, it still greets me by my username. I can't click any of the buttons or tabs in the browser either; they're all grayed out. --Jitterro 00:53, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

I left a message on AmiDaniel's talk page two days ago, and have received no response, nor has he responded here. AmiDaniel has made a few edits in the last couple of days, including one since I left my message, so obviously he's ignoring them. [edit] Feature query

Hey, I see that in the screenshot, VandalProof says "<IP> has recieved no vandalism warnings." I'm looking to improve my own anti-vandalism app WikiGuard, and I'm curious as to how you did this. Any help in that direction would be most appreciated. :) --BradBeattie 05:57, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

If I understood well, VP scans the User Talk and recognizes parts of each test template. Hope that helps! -- lucasbfr talk 00:42, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

That does help, thanks! I saw in the Later Versions section that a Mac version would be desired. I'm not entirely sure what the code base of VP is and how portable it would be, so I just decided to start building something myself.

I'm curious as to how it's grabbing its information that isn't polled from the IRC channel at browne.wikimedia.org. Does it have a direct read-only link to the wikipedia databases or is it grabbing and parsing its information through the web? --Brad Beattie (talk) 03:09, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Problem with automatic warning generation

First off: I am not a VandalProof user, and I'm not especially familiar with it. I've seen VP users leaving inappropriate warnings on user pages along these lines: 1) User adds an insult to an article. I revert, and leave a warning that doesn't use an official test template. For instance, "If you post any more insults I'm going to block you." 2) User puts the insult back in the same article, and a VP user comes around and leaves a friendly, welcoming Test1 message. This seems kind of silly to me. Maybe it's only a small percentage of cases, but VP users and designers need to be aware that the test templates are not the only way of warning users. Perhaps the software could be modified so that if there are messages on the offending user's talk page that are not recognized as test templates, it shows the user talk page to the VP user and gives them a chance to use their discretion about what message to leave. The idea that VP is enforcing the use of the test templates is worrying to me. FreplySpang 13:46, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

Vandal Proof has other user warnings that the user can issue. However, my concern with your example is that you warn a user first time with "If you post any more insults I'm going to block you." if it were a mistake or a new user that is not a very friendly welcome, I feel it is very important to assume good faith in the first warning. Also for someone to actually be block it calls for 3 warnings and vandalism after the last warning. Vandal Proof also allows a user to leave a custom warning that they write as well. Just my thoughts on the issue, hope it gives you a better idea of how things work from a Vandal Proof user stand point. In any case thanks for your help in the fight to keep wikipedia vandalism free and the best it can be!! TheRanger 14:20, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
I wanted to keep the posted example brief and clear. For the most part I actually do post friendlier warnings before bringing out the big guns. I even use the official test templates when they are relevant. But the same issue applies there too. Note, though, that it is not actually required to leave exactly three warnings before blocking. If a user has posted "Joe Smith is a FAG, his phone number is XXX-YYY-ZZZZ, call him and tell him he's a COCKSUCKER" to ten articles, I don't feel too much pressure to be friendly! FreplySpang 14:27, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
Oh ok I see what your saying, in those case I have issued a final warning or a custom warning. However, as you say it would be a good option to see other comments and respond based on that. The speed at which pages can be check with a tool like Vandal Proof helps greatly in the fight of the vandal. Thanks for your points and help in the battle. TheRanger 16:05, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
In such situations, I always skip test1. I too find it silly to give a "thank you for experimenting" when it is clear that the vandal is not experimenting. I sometimes would like to leave custom messages, but am not yet familiar with editing VP options for that. Prometheus-X303- 20:28, 21 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Minor Edits / Watch this Page

By default, my edits in VP are being marked as minor & user talk pages default to "watch this page" in autosubmit. I can't seem to find where to change these defaults (if that's possible). (Although maybe I should've been marking reverts as "minor" all along ...) Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks! SkerHawx 21:41, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WP:UW User warning harmonisation

Hi, Some of you may be aware that a few of us have started a program to harmonise all user page templates and messages. We have listed a number of ideas that we are looking at and are very keen to have your involvement, if only to discuss possible impacts with your software. Currently we are just trying to get ideas, but we will start implementing ideas early next week. If you could just take 5 mins to look through the main project page, the ideas page and it's talk page, and let us know your thoughts, that would be greatly appreciated. [edit] Approval

I was removed from the Awaiting Approval list and given a message on my talk page saying I've been approved, but this message had another user's name on it, and I'm not on the list of registered users. Probably because of this, I can't get VP to work. Archibald99 19:07, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Not working

I used to be a frequent user of VandalProof until a long wikibreak I took. Since then, a new version has been released and also a patch. I have downloaded the new version and patch, and renamed the file .exe, and all the things I should have done. It no longer gives me the window saying that I have not downloaded the newest version and it registers as v1.2.2, but it freezes up and wont let me on. My username is entered correctly and I am still on the registered users list. Any help would be appreciated. -- ßottesiηi (talk) 19:47, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your log-in request failed

I suddenly get this message after months of VP-ing. Rather strangely, it appears just above "Welcome to VandalProof, Mr Stephen!". The main tabs are greyed out, so there's nothing doing. I see it on two computers, so it's probably not cookie or cache related. I cleared monobooks & reinstalled popups, but no change. Any ideas? Mr Stephen 10:16, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Further to that...I left a note earlier on the bug page as I am having the same problem. My start up screen says: Welcome to VandalProof %u!. I am not sure who %u! is??? Maybe it always said that and I' just slow :) . Any help would be great. Thanks! Anger22 12:10, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

I am not getting the message about login failed but it is freezing on me and sometimes closing with "Vandalproof has encountered a problem and needs to close". For some reason my name has been removed from the list of authorized users. I was added by Betacommand here [1], and he welcommed me here[2]. I had difficulties using it, did everything I could myself, was unable to, so I requested assistance here [3]. Instead of assistance, I was removed from the list. Because I have had difficulties on wikipedia recieving help from administrators when requested, this message is in essence a generic template I am writing on all moderators' talk pages and discussion boards in the hopes of recieving if nothing else a response - ideally, however, a solution. [edit] Won't update watchlist

Just starting out with VP, with the 1.3 version. It loaded my watchlist this morning, but now won't update it. Won't load Recent Changes at all. I got the approval notice on my talk page, but still haven't been added to the Approved Users list. However I think it's working at least partially, as when I was trying to learn my way around I accidentally left an AfD notice on an IP vandal's page instead of the intended warning(!). If it makes any difference, I am on a satellite feed, so have to sign in on the secure pages or it will boot me out. I guess I'll try re-downloading. --Kathryn NicDhàna 04:51, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] I'm having a problem and I hope its not me

Sometimes, when I tag a page for speedy using VP I end up creating a blank page like this one Brad Cullian&oldid=90058086 (hopefully speedied itself soon) with the only content being the tag. I thought it might be an accidental recreation -- someone deleted the page just as I tagged it. But as of this moment in time, the page I meant to tag Brad Cullian still exists. (Will probably go redlink soon). Something similar has happened when I tried to speedy a redirect I created by userfying a page from article space. I feel like I'm creating extra work for admins by making these mistakes, -- I'm essentially creating pages that only exist to be speedied. But I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Anyone else having this problem? Dina 18:30, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Problems with verification against list

I have problems with running VandalProof. I was approved to the list, but it still refuses to work. I already discussed problem with moderator Prodego, but even him was not able to help me. I decided to post copy of our discussion here in case anybody had simmilar problem or any idea. --Jan.Smolik 15:39, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Copy of the discussion:

Hello, thanks for approving me using VP. However I still cannot get it working. When I start I get a login window, I my username appears and I am even able to login manualy. But when I click Verify Authorization it just says "You are not on the user list." I tried to login before I was approved, but since then I restarted computer and cleared IE cache. Executable name is "VandalProof 131.exe" so it seems I do have a correct version. Do you have any idea what can be possibly wrong? I cheched the discussion fora and I did not see it was a common problem, so I am writing. Maybe there is still some cache on the way and it will start working in couple of days. Anyway, have a nice day. --Jan.Smolik 22:53, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Do you have cookies enabled in Internet Explorer? That can cause problems logging in. Prodego talk 22:54, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I do have cookies enabled. --Jan.Smolik 22:59, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
Ok, could you please detail exactly what you do when you try to log in (as in every button you press)? From clicking the exe, what happens? Sorry about the inconvenience in this, it will help rule out some problems. Thanks, Prodego talk 23:02, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
I run "VandalProof 131.exe", Language says "en", Root says "wikipedia" (like this, no caps). After two or three seconds my username "Jan.Smolik" apears in the Username. I click "Vefify Authorization". It says: "You are not on the user list." That is all.
I alternatively tried to log out from wikipedia in IE, then clicking "Ch", entering manually my username and password clicked "Log-in To WP", which worked and than "You are not on the user list.", which did not. --Jan.Smolik 23:10, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
Well you are on the userlist, and you do have cookies enabled... Hmm, try disabling any firewall or anti-virus programs. Do you use Internet Explorer for your regular Wikipedia use? And is it IE7? Prodego talk 23:17, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
I will try to completely disable these. I just checked my other computer and it did not work either (my standard computer is behind NAT, the other one not). However it does not seem to be firewall thing, I allowed this exe to go through... Anyway, I will try it. Yes, I am using IE as my primary wikibrowser and it is version 6. Well, if my name is in the list (and it must be correct, because otherwise notification would not be on my talk page), problem seems to be on my side. I might try my office computer if problem is not elsewhere. Thanks for help. --Jan.Smolik 23:40, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
I will let you know if I find anything that can help, Prodego talk 23:53, 28 November 2006 (UTC)¨

End of copided discussion. Any ideas? --Jan.Smolik 15:39, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Did you extract all of the files from the zip folder? --דניאל - Danielrocks123 contribs 22:38, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
Indeed. Actually I tried it today on a computer at scholl and it did not work either. It is wierd. I am giving up. However, I am getting suspicious whether there might be a problem with czech windows and czech IE. But my login only involves english letters so there should not be a problem. I do not know. --Jan.Smolik 00:01, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Log-in not working.

I'm using VP version 1.31. It's not letting me log in. When the program starts I'm not automatically logged-in but I know this is OK because I'm not using IE (Netscape running Firefox engine). But even if I press Chg and enter my username and password then press Log-in to WP, I get nothing. I wait one minute and still nothing. The Verify Authorization remains disabled. I am able to access the internet normally with my browser. What's the problem here? LestatdeLioncourt talk 12:50, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Do you have cookies in IE enabled? You might try loging-in in the IE. Then it should find your login automatically. --Jan.Smolik 00:03, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
you will need to try clicking several times I sometimes have to click 10 times until it logs me in (some glitch with IE I assume) Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 03:47, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
  • For some reason whenever I enter a URL into the address bar in IE and press Enter it crashes, so I can't do that. I do have cookies enabled though (but I guess given the glitch, that's usless).
  • How long should I wait between two clicks? Will it log me in in 5 seconds or 100? Thanks. LestatdeLioncourt talk 20:07, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
I dont wait I just keep clicking until it logs me in. But that error with IE makes me think this error is different. Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 02:29, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
I have the same problem and I've tried clicking but it doesn't seem to work. It sometimes works if I download VP again and use the newly-downloaded one, although this rarely works. Thaurisil 06:12, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Not on user list

When I click "Verify Authorization" to access it, I get an error message telling me that I am not on the users list. I received the "You have now been added to the list of authorized users" message, so what could the problem be? I have cookies enabled in both Firefox (my default browser) and IE. Nat91 03:26, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

Seems you are second. I have the same problem. See section "Problems with verification against list" above. --Jan.Smolik 12:23, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
I saw. It seems like I'm also in your situation. Nat91 20:02, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Waiting for approval

How long should we expect to wait to hear from a moderator after placing ourselves on the Awaiting Approval list? The registration page implied that it would be within 24 hours, but it has been 2 days for me and longer for others- and it appears that no one has been approved thus far in December. M412k 02:11, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

I was wondering the same thing. It looks like many of the names have been there for quite a lot longer than 24hrs. AuburnPilottalk 16:41, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
Yep the list seems pretty big now. Also it would be nice to say where the users should put their name, because I've put mine to the bottom of the list and there are people now who added their names to the top after me... Tom.k 17:45, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

This list is getting ridiculously long. Anyone know what's going on? — BrotherFlounder (aka DiegoTehMexican) 00:41, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

*sigh*, alright, alright. Prodego talk 00:44, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
Thank you for the approval, but how long does it take to reflect on the user list that VP uses to verify you? Because it won't let me in right now, about 10 hours after the approval... Tom.k 10:18, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
It's not letting me in either, after almost 20 days of approval... - Nat91 04:48, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
There is a bug affecting some users, and the cause has not been determined. When AmiDaniel returns from his break, he will have to try to figure it out, because I can not. However, if you are affected by this bug, it may help to write down your internet settings (for IE), what browser you use to edit normally, addons, ect, perhaps in my sandbox. [edit] Vandalism Warnings

Hey guys,

Is there any way to customize the buttons that post warnings to user talk pages? I seem to remember having run across a way to do this before, but I forgot how. Thanks for the help! – Lantoka (talk) 11:03, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

There should be a file called CustomButtons.txt in the same directory as VandalProof. This file lists each button, the text displayed ont the button in VandalProof and the template to insert when the button is clicked. You can change the template to point to something else to insert different text (for example I have some warning templates which insert a heading then the standard template text). The only thing to watch out for is the VandalProof adds its own template at the end of the insert text which links to the revert that has been made. I haven't found a way to remove this extra bit. --MarkS (talk) 09:09, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Problem when viewing diffs

If I get one of those annoying runtime errors while I'm going to rollback an edit, and I have to go back to the articles history after I re-open, when I view the diff of when when the vandalism occured I get an "Error retrieving warnings" message in the spot where it usually states the user's username and the warnings they recieved. What makes it more annoying is that I can't rollback the edit. Is there a way to fix this? // I c e d K o l a 03:45, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

A large number of users are getting this problem. You can see a number of threads on this at the bottom of the VP bug page. --MarkS (talk) 09:13, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Can't login / I was approved, but I'm not on the User List

I tried using VP 1.30, when it was still in beta. It kept crashing, so I figured I'd wait for VP 1.31. I just downloaded VP 1.31, and it tells me I'm not on the user list. I checked and I don't show up on the user list, despite having been approved by betacommand. (see diff, history) I've been using the monobook.js admin-like anti-vandal tools by Voice of All, but I'd really like to give VP a whirl. What should I do? Many thanks in advance. AubreyEllenShomo 20:17, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

I saw the box on the approval page that says the list I checked shows only recently approved users. So, I'm not sure where the complete list is. All I know is this: VP tells me "You are not on the user list." when I hit the "Verify Authorization" button. AubreyEllenShomo 20:30, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
