American Mensa

American Mensa, also known as American Mensa, Ltd., or AML, is a national group within Mensa International.

Although some Americans joined Mensa, then strictly a British organization, in the 1950's, the first local group outside Britain was created in New York in 1960. This group evolved into what is now known as American Mensa.

  • American Mensa has over 50,000 members.
  • Based on 2005 membership figures, the largest local group is Greater New York Mensa. The second largest is Chicago Area Mensa, and the third largest is San Francisco Regional Mensa.
  • Of the general membership, approximately 35% are female, and approximately 65% are male. However, the national and local leadership is approximately 50% male and 50% female.
