After interviewing hundreds of inventors, the judges narrowed it down to 50. It was further narrowed down to 24 and finally the following 12 finalists.

Four were picked from the group of 12. Each judge picked one. Ed Evangelista chose Erik Thompson. Mary Lou Quinlan chose Francisco Patino. Doug Hall chose Janusz Liberkowski and Peter Jones chose Ed Hall.
