AmeCon is a three day anime convention in Leicester, UK, and is one of the largest anime conventions in England. The convention was formed after several committee members of the Leicester Anime and Manga Club (LANMA) decided to run a small, residential event in 2004. This event, became the largest anime convention to be hosted in the British Isles at that time. It runs in even numbered years, opposite to AyaCon's odd years, so as not to overcrowd the UK convention calendar.

AmeCon '06 ran from 11th - 13th August 2006 at the University of Leicester's main campus. Originally, it was set to run at Aston University, Birmingham but due to large-scale refurbishment, that venue no longer suited the needs of the convention.[1] There was a maximum capacity of 1400 people for this event.

Confirmed guests included voice actors Monica Rial and Greg Ayres, voice actors on many ADV and Funimation releases.

The following cosplay events were confirmed for AmeCon 2006:

  • Cosplay Triathlon, consisting of a cosplay style catwalk, a dedicated cosplay competition, and an omake for skits and performances.

This was run over the weekend in the form of three separate events. The first was the Masquerade which consisted of a long catwalk walk from the stage though the bars and out into the halls. Monica voiced "Ame-chan" and commentated the catwalk. Costumes varied from Bleach(which by sheer mass was a standing joke), Katamari Damacy (voted 'best in show') and Zelda. During the event there were technical difficulties in which rogue cosplayers did the cat walk from the opposite end, to appreciative applause. These extended from Naruto to Mana cosplayers, also, an Armstrong cosplayer played to the cameras to raucous laughter.

The Omake was a sure hit, with numerous skits and performances of high standard. The hall was packed, and one skit involving the "season fairies" was given the seal of approval by the audience as sweets were graciously thrown in their direction. There was also a FFX-2 Lenne and Yuna dancing, and appearance by a minion of Lord Ilpalazzo and Vaan from the up and coming new Final Fantasy game FFXII, not to mention the great singing and fighting skits ^^

The final event was the Cosplay ball which was apparently the first of its kind in the UK. This took place on the Sunday night and was very well attended. This ball was a satisfying mix of cosplay and formal wear and.... leather thongs! The music was a variety, starting with a live singer. then ball like music and finally disco music.

  • The first UK-based convention Cosplay Ball, including dance lessons before the event
  • Cosplay Workshop, for those needing a place to work on last minute changes or repairs to their costumes.
