Amanda is a fictional character in the American dramedy series Ugly Betty. She is played by Becki Newton.
[edit] Background
Amanda is the attractive receptionist at MODE magazine and is in allegiance with both Wilhelmina Slater and her assistant Marc when it comes to taking down the two major thorns in Wilhelmina's side: Betty Suarez and her boss Daniel Meade (whom she is attracted to). She is the daughter of an investment banker and has hinted in one episode that he is an embezzler while telling Marc what she was planning to do that evening when she left work to go home.
Amanda also has a tendency to overeat or go on non-stop binges whenever she feels threatened as a way to control her fears and insecurities. This issue is expected to be addressed in future episodes, where it is learned that her past involves her uncontrollable eating habits and her attempts to be the "Perfect" woman. Despite her somewhat conceited exterior she is not that bright (as evidenced by Betty and Christina) and also has a tendency to butcher the spanish language, using mangled pronounciations like HO-la and Bare-rio.
[edit] Connections
- Betty Suarez - Assistant Editor at MODE; Amanda's true goal is to take out Betty, by any and all means, so she can get her job and hopefully be the one who Daniel picks. After Betty agreed to take Sofia's job offer, Amanda filled that position, but don't expect this to last either.
- Daniel Meade - Editor-In-Chief at MODE; He sees Amanda as another one-night stand--he has slept with her but forgot about what happened the following day--and Amanda is none too happy about his womanizing ways, making it more frustrating for her to win him. In the end, it resulted in her finally giving up on going after Daniel after criticizing him on his lustful habits. She even came close to having a three-way with Daniel and his ex-girlfriend Arien, but nothing came to it.
- Marc St. James - Wilhelmina's Assistant at MODE; A loyal ally who both have a dislike for Betty by humiliating her. After the two took advantage of Wilhelmina's office and after placing a prank phone call to the bandaged woman she and Marc found themselves in hot water, but with Marc making a deal with Wilhelmina, she just learned from him that because of this he told her that it will cost her.
- Christina - Seamstress at MODE; Amanda frequently calls her "Braveheart" because of her Scottish heritage. In the tenth episode she told "Santa Claus" that she wishes that Amanda had "..A Brain" because she knows how clueless she is when she's around her.
- Justin Suarez - Betty's nephew; Justin can detect her wardrobe style and how current she is in fashion terms, like what shoes she wore the day he visit Betty at work.
