Alvdal is a municipality in the county of Hedmark, Norway.

Alvdal is bordered by Tynset to the north, Rendalen to the east and south, Stor-Elvdal to the south, and Folldal to the west.
The highest mountain in the municipality, at 1827 m, is Sølnkletten.
The Rørosbane railway line passes through Alvdal.

The Norse form of the name was (øfri) Elfardalr ('(upper) river valley'). The first element is the genitive case of elfr f 'river' (here Glomma), the last element is dalr m 'valley, dale'.
Until 1918 the municipality was called "Lille Elvedalen" ('the small Elvedalen') to distinguish it from "Store Elvedalen" ('the big Elvedalen') (see Stor-Elvdal).
