Alton, Staffordshire

Alton is a village in the county of Staffordshire, England, north of Uttoxeter. It is most famous for the theme park Alton Towers, built on the site of a mansion (also named Alton Towers) owned by the Earls of Shrewsbury and designed by Augustus Pugin.
The surrounding area is called the Churnet Valley, containing the River Churnet.
In 1996 Alton Castle was established by the Archdiocese of Birmingham as a Catholic Youth Retreat Centre.
The village is home to seven public houses, including 'The Talbot', 'The Bull', ' The Royal Oak', 'The Bridge House', 'The White Heart', 'The Blacksmiths' and 'The Lord Shrew' (formerly The Wild Duck).
