Alton is a town in Crawford County, Indiana, United States. The population was 53 at the 2000 census.

Alton is located at 38°7′22″N, 86°25′12″W (38.122715, -86.419920)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²). 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (10.53%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 53 people, 24 households, and 16 families residing in the town. The population density was 120.4/km² (312.3/mi²). There were 65 housing units at an average density of 147.6/km² (383.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 100.00% White.

There were 24 households out of which 29.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 12.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.75.

In the town the population was spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $19,375, and the median income for a family was $29,375. Males had a median income of $41,250 versus $11,250 for females. The per capita income for the town was $11,167. There were 7.7% of families and 9.3% of the population living below the poverty line, including 21.4% of under eighteens and none of those over 64.
