Alticor is a privately held corporation, owned by members of the DeVos and Van Andel families. It was established to serve as the parent company for a handful of business ventures, most notably the multi-level marketing companies Amway and Quixtar and a manufacturing and distribution company Access Business Group. The name was said to be coined from the Latin words altus and cor, roughly meaning "high heart". Since childhood, the founders from the two families became business partners in endeavors such as a hamburger stand, air charter service, and a sailing business. Their partnership was known as the Ja-Ri Corporation. Eventually, they began selling door-to-door vitamins from the Nutrilite company. Becoming very successful, the two opted to start their own multi-level marketing business called American Way (AMWAY).[5]
The families of DeVos and Van Andel now run the company. Co-founder Jay Van Andel recently died.

[edit] Hotels
Alticor also owns the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan, which opened in 1913 as the Pantlind Hotel. It was purchased, refurbished, expanded, and renamed in 1981. The company owns and operates the Courtyard by Marriott in Plaza Towers. A third Alticor hotel is under construction in Grand Rapids which will be operated under the name JW Marriott Hotels. It is scheduled to open in 2007.
The hotels are the only Alticor businesses not directly involved in multi-level marketing, and are operated by the Amway Hotel Corporation subsidiary of Alticor.
