Alternative electronic

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alternative electronic is an umbrella term used to describe a range of lesser-known electronic music genres which are related in some fashion to industrial (and sometimes noise) music. The exact definition of what constitutes alternative electronic music varies, but is generally considered to include industrial, ebm, elektro, futurepop, aggrotech, technoid, power noise and power electronics. The term dark electronic is also used but usually in reference to the more experimental side of the alternative electronic scene.

Although the term has a fairly wide acceptance within the scene that surrounds the music it relates to, there is some contention as to whether the use of the word 'alternative' in this sense is correct, given there are other 'lesser-known' or underground electronic music genres that exist in alternative to the more mainstream dance music (house, techno or trance) but fall outwith of the scope of 'alternative electronic' music, i.e. intelligent dance music, breakcore, digital hardcore, gabber and dubstep.
