[edit] History
Many thousands of years ago, an unidentified cataclysmic environmental disaster occured. The surface became uninhabitable, as radiation levels became deadly, and acid rain began to fall. However, their civilization had developed technology to replace their bodies with android replica's, and some inhabitants managed to download their consciousnesses in android bodies and retreated to an underground complex beneath the planet's crust. Survivors included Sacara, Bareeth, Tira, Wallas, and Hubbald (who originally created the underground complex).
During the next 11,000 years, most inhabitants became disgruntled with their meaningless existence, and became suicidal. Many went back to the surface or left through the Stargate, knowing that their power supply would soon run out. Others were destroyed in accidents, until only an android named Harlan remained.
[edit] Contact with Earth
After visiting Altair and spending a brief amount of time with Harlan, SG-1 returned to Earth, but subsequently discovered that their consciousnesses had been placed into exact android doubles. Harlan, who was desperate for companionship and assistance with maintaining his subterranean facility, had duplicated their bodies and downloaded the counsiousnesses. Unable to stray too far from the power source on Altair, SG-1 was forced to return to Altair and confront Harlan about his actions. SG-1 demanded restoration to their original bodies, but Harlan refused.
Eventually, the android SG-1 discovered that their original bodies were not destroyed as claimed by Harlan, and were stored unconscious in a laboratory. However, their minds were copied rather than moved. Harlan had intended to send the originals back through the Stargate later, without revealing they had been copied to either version of SG-1.
The android duplicates later decided to remain on Altair once their originals were rescued, having no other choice due to their reliance on Harlan's power source. Also, since they retained all the knowledge of the original SG-1, they knew they would be a security risk if captured by the Goa'uld and decided to bury the Stargate to make Altair unreachable. [1]
However, they couldn't bear their isolation for long. The android SG-1 team soon dug the Stargate back up, and began exploring planets themselves, just as their original versions did. The android team eventually died in action in the course of defeating the System Lord Cronos along with their original counterparts, but Harlan survived and presumably remains in residence. [2]
The SGC appears to have received plans for the Altairan androids. It remains to be seen what they will do with them. [3]
[edit] Notes
This planet is not the homeworld of the Ancients, who were originally known as Alterans and evolved in a distant galaxy. It is also unknown whether it orbits the real star named Altair.
