Altaf Wani

Altaf A. Wani, Ph.D. is a professor in the Department of Radiology and the Department of Cellular and Molecular Biology. He is a member of Molecular Carcinogenesis and Chemoprevention program of the James Cancer Hospital and Research Institute. He is a Graduate Studies Committee member of the Ohio State Biochemistry Program and member of Integrated Biomedical Graduate Program. Dr. Wani is the Director of Molecular Carcinogenesis Laboratory and conducts Basic Cancer research in the area of DNA damage and repair.

He serves on the Appointments, Tenure and Promotion Committee of the OSU College of Medicine and Public Health. He represents his department at the University Faculty Council and Senate.

Dr. Wani serves on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) chartered XNDA study-section and on ad-hoc basis on other NIH panels.

He is a member of the American Association of the Advancement of Sciences (AAAS), American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Environmental Mutagen Society and American Society of Photobiology.

In 2004 Dr. Wani was inducted as AAAS Fellow.

He was born in Srinagar in Kashmir, a valley in the western foothills of Himalayas. He obtained his early education and doctorate in Biochemistry from India before coming to USA in 1979. He lives with his wife Gulzar, daughter Baraq, who recently married a fellow Kashmiri Dr. Zubair Iqbal Shah, and son Najum in Columbus, Ohio.
