Western Europe’s third largest cigarette manufacturer, Altadis produces and sells blond and dark cigarettes. The tobacco industry comprises just a few major global players, of which Altadis is a world leader. Altadis is the only top-tier company operating in the major markets of the United States, Spain and France. It is also the only company to offer a portfolio of prestige Cuban brands, thanks to its acquisition of a 50% interest in Habanos SA in 2000. Altadis also purchased General Cigar & Lane Limited in the United States. General Cigar was a large purveyor of cigars such as Macanudo, and the Dominican made Romeo y Julieta. Lane Limited is the largest purveyor of RYO tobaccos and includes such brands as Bugler and Midnight Special. In 2003, Altadis acquired 800-JR Cigar, Inc., one of the largest cigar retailers in the United States.
