[edit] Biography

[edit] Background

2004 In spirit, Aloud was conceived in the late 1990s when a 15-year-old Jen de la Osa and a not quite 15-year-old Henry Beguiristain met for the first time in their hometown of Miami. Sharing a love for the guitar and the music of The Beatles, U2, Oasis, The Who, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan, the two budding songwriters would move to Boston, Massachusetts in 2001. They crossed paths with Boston-area native Roy Fontaine, who eventually joined on bass and became one of the founding members of what was now named Aloud. After a few tenuous drummers, Ross Lohr (also a Boston-area native) would be the final piece of the puzzle to the band’s lineup.

[edit] Previous Incarnations

In December 2001, Jen and Henry met with drummer Michael Gardner (who, in turn, introduced Roy into the band). A name (The Feedback, a temporary solution) wasn't settled on until February of 2002, in time for their first Boston gig. Mike was released from the group in April, and the name was dropped.

At the genesis of Aloud was Jen and Henry's friend Robert Acevedo. Robert had originally drummed in Jen and Henry's first band in Miami named Rain (1998-2001). In order to complete the lineup, Robert served as a temporary drummer from May 2002-August 2003. His split from the group was a mutual one due to a combination of health issues and a general deterioration of relationships with Jen, Henry, and Roy.

Eric Anderson (formerly of the Boston band Schnockered) filled in on a strictly temporary basis between August and November of 2003 to help complete the band's commitments. By October, Ross had already formally joined the group. Eric was kept on till November to complete shows that had already been booked while rehearsals with Ross took place.

[edit] The Sooner It Comes (2004, EP)

In the summer of 2004, Aloud released their 6-song record entitled The Sooner It Comes, which was recorded that spring with producer Ian Hughes at Courtlen Studios. While the band had released two home-recorded EPs in the past, this would be the first time they'd step into a studio and have a proper CD pressed.

A majority of the six-song EP was recorded live in the studio (with vocals overdubbed later), giving the disc a very "raw" sound.

It was released on June 12, 2004.

Tracklisting:
1. A Cup of Tea
2. (Hey Now) What's It To You
3. Help Me Help You
4. Down
5. Mind Relaxer
6. Don't Trust the Radio

The band's logo, the busted radio, is derived directly from "Don't Trust the Radio."

[edit] Leave Your Light On (2006, LP)

Aloud finished recording a new album in October 2005 with Hugh Wyman (ex-Baby Strange) producing and Tom Polce mixing. Leave Your Light On was released on May 2, 2006 on Lemon Merchant Records to positive press[1][2][3][4]. The album contained all-new releases, including "All I Can Do," "Beaches" and "Godspeed."

Tracklisting:

[edit] Trademark Issues

Issues surfaced in early 2005 with an electro-pop French duo going by the same moniker. The duo consisted of Cyrille Bodin and Gregory Louis. Paperwork submitted by Bodin and Louis to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (SN: 76580505) is open to the public and can be viewed here.

The main argument was in first use dates. Bodin and Louis listed September 23, 2003 as the date of first use. Aloud argued their first use in commerce of the name “Aloud” had been used prior (May, 2002). According to the USPTO site, their trademark application has been held up since 5/18/05.

As of 4/12/2006, the application is still listed as LIVE. However, Bodin and Louis broke the group up in 2005, making the point moot and clearing the way for the American 'Aloud' to use the name without any foreseeable hindrance.

Cyrille Bodin is currently in a new band named Amen Birdmen.
