My name is Aliman Sears. I live in Honolulu, Hawaii, where I am a psychiatric social worker. I currently run a statewide Supported Employment Program (SEP) [1] for Steadfast Housing Development Corporation [2]. Steadfast is a private non-profit that serves the mentally ill (those who are challenged by Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, etc.). My main concern these days is with establishing consistent policy for the program throughout the state of Hawaii. I am also trying to educate the public that mental illness is erroneously portrayed by the media as being a terrible affliction, and trying to educate professional social workers that persons with mental illness can work normal jobs. I have worked with the Mentally ill and Developmentally disabled populations for about 16 years.
I am a CPRP (Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner) and I hold a Master's degree in Philosophy from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium [3]. I teach philosophy, ethics, and logic/critical thinking at Chaminade University [4] and TransPacific Hawaii College in Honolulu. My area of concentration in grad school, and my area of interest, is called Process philosophy. I'm also an 19-year member of Subud.
