Alice Brown (athlete)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alice Brown b 1960 is a retired U.S athlete who was Silver Medalist in the 1984 Olympic 100m final in a time of 11.13 behind the great Evelyn Ashford.
She was a very fast starter, it was this consistent ability that led to her being the 1st leg runner in two Olympic 4x100 Relay finals 1984- 88 both teams won the gold.
In 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games the U.S. won the gold medal from Canada by over a second, this was partly due to a very strong team and Alice's superb start. The US were clear favorites as there were no teams from eastern Europe because of the boycott. The team was never seriously challenged, led from gun to tape and triumphed with a time of 41.60 seconds one of the fastest times in history.
In 1988 Seoul Olympic Games it was the first time all nations were present since Montréal in 1976. In the final of the Women’s 4x100 Relay all the strongest nations were present. The USA, GDR and USSR the Jamaicans were no starters.
Alice Brown once again led the United States challenge running the first leg, in a superb piece of relay running the left the GDR runner SILKE MOELLER trailing in her wake, by the time she handed over to Sheila Echols (2nd Leg) she had caught the Bulgarian athlete in the lane ahead.
Florence Griffith Joyner (3rd Leg) took over and handed over to the great Evelyn Ashford (anchor) who in very impressive fashion made up three metres on MARLIES GOHR lost in the last exchange and led the U'S team to victory by a clear metre. The winning time was way down (41.97 seconds) on the U.S record because the baton exchanges were sloppy and 'safe'. It was basic speed and sheer talent that won the U.S their second consecutive gold in this event.
In 1987 she won relay Gold at the World Championships Rome, Italy. A very strong and well-drilled team consisting of Diane Williams (2nd Leg) Florence Griffith (3rd Leg) and Pam Marshall (anchor) were favorite. They won their semi-final with a time over a second faster than the usually dominant GDR team. They won the from the GDR (Silver) in a clocking of 41.55 a U.S record at the time, this time also still ranks as another one of the fastest times in history.
