This diagram demonstrates the constitution of different kinds of ionizing radiation and their ability to penetrate matter.

Alpha particles are stopped by a sheet of paper whilst beta particles halt to an aluminium plate. Gamma radiation is dampened when it penetrates matter. Gamma rays can be stopped from 4 meters of lead.
