Alfred P. Sloan Foundation

The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, a philanthropic nonprofit institution in the United States, was established in 1934 by Alfred P. Sloan, Jr., then President and Chief Executive Officer of the General Motors Corporation.
The Foundation's programs and interests fall into the areas of science and technology, standard of living and economic performance, and education and careers in science and technology.
The total assets of the Sloan Foundation have a market value of about $1.5 billion.
In 2000 the foundation initiated a national program to prevent bioterrorism that has evolved to address general terrorism preparedness. To date Sloan has made 40 grants totaling over $17 million dollars in its bioterrorism program.
Among the projects recent sponsored in whole or in part by the Sloan Foundation are the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Census of Marine Life, the latter also including OBIS, the Ocean Biogeographic Information System.
