Alexis MacDonald ran as the New Democratic Party candidate for the Central Nova riding in Nova Scotia in the 2004 federal election and again in 2006. In 2004, she more than doubled the NDP vote in the riding to slightly more than 10,000, finishing a strong second to Peter MacKay. In 2006, she again increased the NDP vote in the riding, coming within 8% of Conservative incumbent Peter MacKay and receiving 33% of the popular vote (one of the highest levels of NDP support in the country). At the September 2006 NDP Convention, Alexis was elected chair of the Participation of Women (POW) Committee.

She currently lives in Toronto, Ontario working as the Director of Programmes for the Stephen Lewis Foundation.
