Alexiares and Anicetus

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alexiares and Anicetus are minor twin gods in Greek Mythology. They are the sons of Heracles and Hebe, and along with their father, the guardians of Mount Olympus. Their names mean "he who wards off war" and "the unconquerable" respedctively. They were worshipped the most in Thebes and Rhodes.

Little is known about them besides a mention of their birth in the Bibliotheca: [Herakles] achieved immortality, and when Hera’s enmity changed to friendship, he married her daughter Hebe, who bore him sons Alexiares and Aniketos.

The twins, in their youth, always joined their mother as she accompanied Aphrodite in her youth. The two gods fell in love with the Godess and kidnapped her. The two had promised to share her but Alexiares being the eldest twin kept her to himself and would not allow his brother to share her bed. This led to conflict between the two and as they argued Aphrodites lover Ares saved her from the twins.
