[edit] Time with Kyle Rayner

Alex was a photographer for a newspaper in Los Angeles, who had a problem with Kyle's sometimes immature attitude to work. When Kyle revealed the new ring he received, she was at first apprehensive. However, she agreed to help Kyle train himself with his new powers, and even took photos of Kyle as Green Lantern when he would be in action.

Her time with Kyle while he had the ring was tragically shortlived, however. In Green Lantern vol. 3, #54, Kyle returns home to find that Major Force had come to his home, strangled Alex and stuffed her in the refrigerator. This drove Kyle to attack Major Force, and almost wound up losing his ring when his charge ran out (Kyle was saved when Major Force revealed the 'green rock' he had in his possession, which turned out to be a power lantern that recharged the ring).

[edit] After death

In his first encounter with Hal Jordan as Parallax, Hal offered to resurrect Alex as part of his plans to recreate the universe. When Kyle moved to New York and joined with the Titans, he fell asleep once while manning the monitors and his ring made a projection of Alex. Later, when the demon Neron attacked, he attempted to 'tempt' Kyle by offering to bring Alex back to life. Kyle, having already rejected the same offer from Hal, similarly refused Neron. Finally, in a Green Lantern Annual, Kyle and Hal's spirits got switched, so that Kyle was in Hal's shoes when Hal was first starting out as Green Lantern, and Hal was filling in for Kyle when Alex was still his girlfriend. When Major Force came to attack Alex that time, Hal was able to come in time and stop him from killing her. However, when they eventually switched and came back to the present, Alex was once again deceased.

A different version of Alex came about in the mini-series Circle Of Fire, when Kyle summoned six different versions of Green Lantern to help him fight off Oblivion - one of which happened to be Alexandra DeWitt as Green Lantern.

[edit] Women in Refrigerators syndrome

Because of the monstrous manner in which Alex was killed - and because of the different 'significant others' of superheroes that were in danger of being killed by a villain (including, ironically enough, Kyle Rayner again, when Major Force made Kyle believe he killed his mother and stuffed her in the oven) - a woman who is killed in a particularly nasty manner is said to have suffered from the Women in Refrigerators syndrome. See the entry there for more details.
