Alexander, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg, was born on January 20, 1573 in Sønderborg (German: Sonderburg) in Schleswig. He was the third child of Johann II, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plon and Elisabeth von Braunschweig-Grubenhagen. Because his elder surviving brother chose Ærø as his seat, Alexander received Sønderborg upon their father's death and was in practice its second duke. Alexander died on May 13, 1627 in Sønderborg.
Alexander married Dorothea von Schwarzburg-Sondershausen on November 26, 1604 in Oldenburg. They had eleven children:
- Johann Christian, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Franzhagen (April 26, 1607 - June 28, 1653)
- Alexander Heinrich, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg (September 12, 1608 - September 5, 1657)
