Alex Jesaulenko Medal

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The AFL has had two different Alex Jesaulenko Medals through its history: one for State of Origin, and one for Mark of the Year.

[edit] State of Origin

In State of Origin, the medal was awarded to the best player on the ground for The Allies in State Of Origin matches. It was only awarded from 1995 to 1998. It is named after Alex Jesaulenko, because Jesaulenko, as a foreigner who first played Australian football in Canberra, would have qualified for the Allies, had the concept existed during his career.

[edit] Mark of the Year

The AFL named the medal for Mark of the Year after Jesaulenko because of his mark in the 1970 Grand Final, the most recognisable specky of all time. It is unclear exactly when this medal was first presented for Mark of the Year.
