Alek Stojanov (born April 25, 1973 in Windsor, Ontario) is a former National Hockey League Right Winger who played for the Vancouver Canucks and Pittsburgh Penguins. He is best known for his trade from Vancouver to Pittsburgh in exchange for Markus Näslund. (recognized as one of the most lopsided trades in the history of the NHL)

[edit] Career

The Canucks drafted Stojanov in the first round, seventh overall of the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. Picked a single spot after superstar Peter Forsberg, Vancouver had the hopes that Stojanov would be a two-way power forward. He scored 45 points in 62 games with 179 penalty minutes in his draft year for the Hamilton Dukes. However, his offensive game peaked at the junior level and he was never a respectable offensive threat in any other league. (although he did score 30 points in 73 games for the Syracuse Crunch during the 1994-95 season).

At the NHL level, Stojanov suffered from a production standpoint. He recorded two goals and seven points in 107 career NHL games. He scored his initial goal in the first game following his trade to Pittsburgh.

After his tenure with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Stojanov bounced around in the minor league system with the Detroit Vipers of the IHL, the Hamilton Bulldogs of the AHL, and the New Mexico Scorpions (of the WPHL and later the CHL) before retiring from hockey following the 2001-02 season. He is now studying to become a firefighter 1.
