Alcester is a city located in Union County, South Dakota. It is part of the Sioux City/Iowa/Nebraska/South Dakota Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 880.

Alcester is located at 43°1'23" North, 96°37'50" West (43.023041, -96.630451)^GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²). 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Alcester has been assigned the ZIP code 57001, and the FIPS place code 00700.

As of the census^GR2 of 2000, there were 880 people, 388 households, and 233 families residing in the city. The population density was 999.3/km² (2,590.8/mi²). There were 430 housing units at an average density of 488.3/km² (1,266.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.41% White, 0.00% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.91% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.45% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 388 households out of which 25.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.4% were married couples living together, 5.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.7% were non-families. 36.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 24.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.10 and the average family size was 2.72.

In the city the population was spread out with 18.9% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 19.9% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 33.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 48 years. For every 100 females there were 74.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 71.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $29,432, and the median income for a family was $44,286. Males had a median income of $28,047 versus $21,167 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,593. 7.9% of the population and 6.5% of families were below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.8% of those under the age of 18 and 16.0% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
