Alberto João Jardim

Alberto João Cardoso Gonçalves Jardim, GCIH, KmstkNO[citation needed], (born Funchal, Madeira Island, February 4, 1943) is the President of the Regional Government of Madeira, Portugal, and co-founder of the Madeirense branch of the popular centre-right-wing Portuguese party PSD and Vice-president of European Popular Party.
He graduated in law in 1973, from the University of Coimbra, and after finishing the course he became a high school teacher.
He was director of the Instituto de Emprego e Formação Profissional da Ilha da Madeira (Unemployment and Professional Formation Centre of Madeira Island). As a journalist, he was director of "Jornal da Madeira". He also wrote for different Portuguese newspapers and magazines.
Since 1978 Alberto João Jardim became successively and democraticly elected for President of the Regional Government of Madeira, as President of the Regional Government of Madeira he is member of the Conselho de Estado, Conselho Superior de Defesa Interna and Conselho Superior de Segurança Interna of the Portuguese Republic.
Alberto João Jardim is also a member and ex-Vice President (2000-2001) of the European Union Committee of the Regions. He is Honorary President of the European Summit of Regions & Cities.
He is founder and a member of the European Regional Assembly.

Alberto João Jardim has been known for strict control of local press and businesses, for overwhelming financial support to local football clubs. The government is responsible for more than 60% of the employment, which also provides some control of the local public opinion.
His government has had a big budget deficit for more than a decade, which has been financed by the mainland government.
Due to his high unpopularity among mainland Portugal citizens, the support for Madeira independence in the mainland has risen in the last years.
