Albert Yeung

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Albert Yeung is the founder and chief of Emperor Group, a conglomerate with numerous business interests in Hong Kong including selling of luxury watches, real estate management, publishing and being the dominant record label in Hong Kong (called Emperor Entertainment Group or EEG).

Yeung served a minor prison sentence in the early 1980s and was alleged to have been a triad leader. Reportedly, he retired from triad life in the mid 1990s to start Emperor Group, a highly successful business in Hong Kong today with close ties to the Chinese mainland government. Despite his alleged retirement, Yeung remains on the blacklist of the U.S. and Canadian governments, both of which continues to label Yeung a triad leader and barred from entry into those countries. The ICAC, Hong Kong's elite crime-fighting organization, maintains an active file on Yeung.

Among Hong Kong locals, Yeung is famous for his "triad gang" way of conducting business. A few years ago, a male artist named Leung Sze-Ho cracked jokes about Yeung on a popular TV show in Hong Kong. That very evening, Sze-Ho was found badly beaten. Since then, very few people dare to cross Yeung. Several other popular Hong Kong entertainers have also had similar runs with Yeung and his employees throughout the 1990s.

Perhaps Yeung's most audacious act involved his short-lived magazine, East Week, publishing semi-nude photos of Carina Lau, a famous actress of Hong Kong's yesteryears. Several years ago, Lau was kidnapped, raped and held for ransom by triad members. Many suspected Yeung published the photos to embarrass Lau after she backed out of a business deal with Emperor Group. After an outpouring of outrage amongst the Hong Kong public, Yeung apologized publicly to Lau and closed East Week.

Yeung's record label, EEG, has created and promoted several of Hong Kong's most famous singing sensations including Joey Yung, Eason Chan, Twins. It is widely rumored in Hong Kong that female singers of his EEG label are required to have sex with Yeung and his business associates.
