Harry Orchard was born Albert E Horsley in 1867 in Ontario, Canada. He was also known as Thomas Hogan. He was a member of the Western Federation of Miners.

In 1897, Harry Orchard, along with August Paulsen, Harry Day, May Arkwright, butcher F. M. Rothrock, lawyer Henry F. Samuels and C. H. Reeves, invested in the Hercules Mine, Idaho.

In 1905 he was arrested for the assassination of Frank Steunenberg, ex-governor of Idaho. He made a full to confession to James McParland, a Pinkerton detective and implicated Bill Haywood, Charles Moyer and George Pettibone in the crime. He also confessed to murdering 17 other people. He testified in Haywood's trial, but the jury found Haywood not guilty. According to Charles Siringo, McParland's bodyguard, Clarence Darrow may have bribed members of the jury.
