Al Mukalla (Arabic: المكلا) is the capital of the Hadramaut coastal region in the southern part of Yemen on the Gulf of Aden (480 km (300 mi) east of Aden). It is the most important port in the province of Al Shahr. Historically, it was a main trading destination for the trade between India and Africa.
It was ruled by the Sultanate of Quaiti until 1967 when it became a part of South Yemen and then of the larger Republic of Yemen.
