Alvaro "Al" Montoya (born February 13, 1985 in Glenview, Illinois) is a professional ice hockey goaltender. He is currently a prospect in the New York Rangers system of the National Hockey League.
[edit] Playing career
Montoya backstopped the Texas Tornado of the North American Hockey League prior to attending the University of Michigan for three years, beginning in the 2002-03 season. He would enjoy success at Michigan, especially during his final season in 2004-05, where he posted a record of 30 wins, 7 losses and 3 ties. Following his final season with Michigan, Montoya was drafted by the Rangers in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft with the sixth overall pick. His made his professional debut with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League in the 2005-06 season.
Montoya is among the best prospects in the Rangers' organization, though emerging star Henrik Lundqvist stands in his path as the goalie of the present and foreseable future in New York, resulting in speculation that Montoya is to be traded.
