From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Al-Ashraf Qansuh al-Ghawri was the last of the Mamluk Sultans. One of the last of the Burji dynasty, he reigned from 1501 to 1516.[1]

Sultan al-Ghawri led his army against the Ottoman Turks in a battle at Marj Dabiq, north of Aleppo, on August 24, 1516; The Memluk army was close to win this battle, but the betrayal of two Memluk leaders (Jan Burd Al-Ghazaly and Khaer Bek) led to the Memluk loss of the battle and the death of the Sultan Qansuh Al-Ghawri.

Loss of this battle and death of the Sultan al-Ghawri at the same time, marked the end of Mamluke control of the Middle East that subsequently passed to Ottomans over the next few years.
