Akhil Reed Amar

Akhil Reed Amar is Southmayd Professor of Law at Yale Law School, an expert on constitutional law and criminal procedure.

Amar is a summa cum laude graduate of Yale College (B.A., 1980) and the Yale Law School (J.D. 1984) and was an editor of the Yale Law Journal. Amar clerked for now-U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer when he was a judge on the First Circuit Court of Appeals.
He is the author of numerous publications and books. He is a consultant to the popular television show The West Wing, on which the character Josh Lyman refers to him in an episode in Season Five. He serves on the Board of Directors for the National Constitution Center. His course on constitutional law is one of the most popular undergraduate offerings at Yale College. Amar's younger brother, Vikram Amar, teaches at the UC Hastings College of Law.
Among Amar's students at Yale was Neal Katyal, who would later become well known as the winning lead counsel in the landmark Supreme Court case Hamdan v. Rumsfeld. Amar and Katyal also published articles together in law review and political opinion journals in 1995 and 1996.
Amar is currently a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Suffolk University Law School.
